“Having now completed its second edition which took place on Sunday, the 20th of December 2015, at 9.30am from San Giacometto – Rialto, the sport and charity event organized by ‘The Venice Sport Shop’ in collaboration with the Municipality of Venice Murano Burano raises funds for the charity Avapo Venezia onlus, that has been working on behalf of cancer patients in Venice and the islands for the past 27 years.
The non-competitive race, that brings together Avapo Venezia volunteers, families, recreational runners, children and lovers of Nordic walking has two routes: the first runs 5 kilometers, reserved for children and adults with buggies, which, after crossing the Rialto bridge, winds through the Mercerie, Piazza San Marco, Riva degli Schiavoni, Sant’Elena, and Garibaldi a Castello, where, in front of the bar ‘El refolo’, all participants are offered refreshments. The second course, around 9 kilometers, follows the same route to San Marco and Riva Schiavoni, before turning off towards the Academia and Punta della Dogana, and then goes back towards Via Garibaldi. At the end of the run, the Santas can walk to the Loggia of the fish market of Rialto, where they can take part in an event for the children of the city.
The participation fee for the run is 10 euro, which includes a Santa Claus suit with a beard and hat. Half of the fee is donated to the charity Avapo Venezia.
The initiative brings together major sports and volunteer organizations such as “Atletica Murano Runners”, “Venezia Triathlon”, “Running Club Venezia” as well as scout groups, “Cerchi d’Onda”, the legendary “Pink Lioness in Venice” and the group of volunteers coordinated by Claudio Burigana.
